Installing flush mount speakers outdoors

We’re frequently asked about mounting all weather flush mount speakers like our CA series outdoors, exposed to the elements. It really makes little difference whether they’re mounted outdoors or in a shower stall/sauna/steam room, the rules are the same:

  • Choose a location with a flat surface.
  • Be sure there’s enough depth behind the mounting surface to clear the back of the driver.
  • Use the included template to scribe the cut-out.
  • Cut carefully, trying not to disturb the insulation in the wall cavity.
  • Don’t break the insulation vapor barrier. If you do, re-seal it with appropriate tape/plastic.
  • If there isn’t any insulation in the cavity install some appropriate insulation, like fiberglass behind the driver, and extending a foot or two above and below the cut out, you can check this blog to learn more on how to deal with it.
  • Run a bead of outdoor grade silicone sealant around the inside of the speaker’s bezel before you insert the driver into the cut out. Use only silicone as other chemicals may seriously damage the bezel.
  • After connecting the wire insert the speaker in the opening and press it firmly against the silicone caulk and the wall surface.
  • Tighten the mounting devices while holding the speaker to prevent it from turning and breaking the silicone seal.
  • Clean up any silicone that squeezed out when you tightened the mounts.
